"It's very important for me these days to keep it enjoyable, otherwise what's the point," Thompson said.
"I like my art to be spontaneous, I enjoy playing around with colour.
"I love landscapes and nature, and I have been into seascapes lately."
Thompson said she likes to have depth in her artworks, to capture meaning and find something to resonate with her audience.
Her new exhibition Kaleidoscope 1 is currently showing at "The Gallery", a new art space at the Commercial Hotel in Terang.
"I love looking through kaleidoscopes, they are playful and colourful and the term just came to me as a title for the show," she said.
"I look for variety, it's the spice of life as one of my mum's friends used to say.
"I have been busting to have an art show and I stumbled across the Gallery here in Terang, this whole thing has been serendipitous with the gallery space opening here.
"There is an appreciation for the old, but with a modern edge.
"It is similar to my work, I try to aspire to modernism, stretching people a little. Sometimes I like to do things people will recognise and sometimes I like to get out there and be a bit abstract."
Jane Catherine Thompson's Kaleidoscope 1 exhibition will run at The Gallery, Commercial Hotel Terang, until December 8. Gallery hours are 1-4pm, Wednesday to Sunday.
