Justin Rotherham, 36, of Dawson Street, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he made a self-represented bail application.
He told the court he was already on bail for attending a family member's home while intoxicated, despite a court order preventing him from remaining within 50 metres of the property.
He said if he was released on bail, he would abide by strict conditions and continue to reside with his elderly parents, who he drove to the supermarket regularly.
Mr Rotherham said he was not proud of his criminal history, which includes 15 prior convictions for family violence-related offending.
"This isn't the life I chose and if I could change it, I would at the drop of a hat," he said.
Magistrate Mark Stratmann said the man had failed to show compelling reasons why he should be released on bail and remanded him in custody until November 21.
Police allege Mr Rotherham grabbed a woman around the throat twice and pinned her against a wall about 6.50pm on Monday night .
The victim starting to go blue and when someone warned him to let her go, he said he didn't care if she died.
He told the victim if she called police he would kill her when he got out of jail.
He then asked the victim's housemate to drive him somewhere so that he wouldn't be arrested.
The housemate refused.
Police arrived to find Mr Rotherham leaning up against a car drinking alcohol.
He was arrested and conveyed to the Warrnambool police station.
