Colac police Acting Sergeant Paul Barker said the 56-year-old Cororooke man was travelling at 172 km/h on the Colac-Forrest Road on Sunday afternoon.
Highway patrol offices impounded the blue Ford XR8 for 30 days, costing the driver $1170. He will also face court on dangerous driving and excessive speed charges.
Sergeant Barker said it was the highest speed he had heard of on the road, which has two-way traffic.
"It shows a complete disregard for their safety and anyone else on the road," he said.
"It was bad enough someone doing it on the highway, but on that road that's asking for trouble.
"It's a touristy area and you have a lot of potential for wildlife."
Sergeant Barker gave a stern warning for others considering similar behaviour.
"You won't keep your car for very long," he said.
