The year was 1988 - Cameron played school football for Brauer College while Hughes lined up for the old Warrnambool CBC.
Hughes still puffs his chest out today remembering his school team defeated Cameron's side.
But this Saturday at the MCG, Hughes is urging all Warrnambool people who don't support Richmond to rally behind Cameron as he attempts to coach GWS to its first AFL premiership.
"Leon is a class act," he said.
"I've still got memories of the game of school footy. I was in year 12 and Leon was in year 10.
"We won the game but Leon was one of the best players on the ground. I've followed Leon's career very closely.
"He was a top footballer at the Western Bulldogs and Richmond and I think he's been under-rated as a coach.
"He's done a huge job at GWS. I would love to think people in Warrnambool will support Leon on Saturday."
