Hamilton police Sergeant Shaun McCulloch said police received reports from the public of an erratic driver early Saturday.
"At 1.45am Saturday morning a man in his 20s was reported to be driving erratically in the McDonald's drive-thru," he said.
"The driver was intercepted in Hamilton's Brown Street soon after leaving the drive-thru and tested positive in a preliminary breath test."
Sergeant McCulloch said an evidentiary test back at the Hamilton police station recorded a reading more than three times the legal limit at .153.
"His licence was immediately suspended and his car impounded for 30 days which will attract impoundment fees of about $1200," he said.
"We are severely disappointed. This driver had to have known he was heavily under the influence of alcohol and still chose to drive, putting other road users at risk."
Sergeant McCulloch said there were indications the man was under the influence of alcohol before he even took the initial breath test.
"We had to point at his window to get him to wind it down," he said.
"At that stage I thought we might be in for a winner. It was just a ridiculous decision to drive in that condition.
"We had him before he even got a chance to have his Maccas."
