Warrnambool police Sergeant James van Engelen said the single-vehicle collision happened at 12.20am when the driver of the Ford Ranger utility travelling south in Fairy Street failed to negotiate the roundabout with Timor Street.
He ran into a metal sign and then a Norfolk Island pine tree in the median strip.
The air bags deployed but the man was trapped by the legs and had to be freed by State Emergency Service volunteers.
"There was extensive damage to ute which had to be towed from the accident scene," Sergeant van Engelen said.
"The driver suffered injuries to his legs and was conveyed to the Warrnambool Base Hospital for assessment and treatment.
"A blood sample was taken. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the accident," he said.
At 5.30am Thursday a Warrnambool man in his early 20s crashed into a parked car near the Derby Street milkbar in Warrnambool.
The driver was heading east down the service road when he clipped the parked car and pushed it about eight metres.
His Honda CRV rolled onto its side as a result of the impact.
The driver was taken to the Warrnambool Base Hospital for assessment and treatment.
Investigations are continuing into the cause of the accident but the driver is likely to be charged with careless driving.
