Former Warrnambool man Andrew Atkinson spent time overseas during his 26 years as a police officer. His first stint was spent in East Timor, where he spent six months.
Mr Atkinson said it was an eyeopening experience living in a third world country.
He spoke about his time abroad on episode three of our podcast Copper Files.
Mr Atkinson spoke about the rewarding aspects of his deployment and the fear he faced when attending riots.
He also spoke about the incident that saw him wind up in a hospital bed battling for his life.
