Kelson, 16, started her season in wing attack but was switched to wing defence in round 14.
She expects to line-up in defence for the Mandy van Rooy-led side in its must-win clash against Camperdown on Saturday.
The fifth-placed Magpies sit two points clear of the Roosters.
Kelson, who has played all of her juniors for South Warrnambool and is part of its top-placed 17 and under side, has settled in well at wing defence.
She prides herself on applying pressure in the one-on-one contests.
"It's really rewarding when you get intercepts," she said.
"Against Cobden was the main full game I played there. We played really good and came away with a draw which was good for us with them being on top. It's worked for us from then on."

Kelson, who goes to Emmanuel College, has relished playing open grade.
"The best part has been having a bigger challenge," she said.
"All of the girls are so nice and it's good to play with a different bunch of girls to the under 17s."
South Warrnambool is expecting a tough clash with Camperdown with the rain and wind forecast to play a part.
"The weather is not going to be very good so it will probably be a very scrappy game," Kelson said.
"They are definitely a very strong team and have really good defenders."
Kelson said the season had included "lots of upsets" which kept teams guessing.
"The last few weeks we've really settled," she said.
"We've had our training sessions split up. We used to have division one and open together and now we've split it up and feel it's helped a lot."
