The Seagulls forward was yellow carded in the second term of their 13.13 (91) to 10.16 (76) win against Camperdown at Leura Oval on Saturday.
McCartney was sent off following a melee. Port Fairy assistant coach Winis Imbi said it was likely the club would contest the report.
Imbi was rapt with how his players responded after the half-time break.
"We were pleased with the third quarter because in the second quarter we were involved in a melee and at half-time we talked about being a mature side and being disciplined and channelling our aggression in the right way," he said.

Both sides kicked three goals in the third term with the Seagulls five points up at the final break.
Imbi said the Magpies made it a challenging afternoon.
"Camperdown plays a very offensive game style which is good because we had to be disciplined in the way we defended," he said.
"We didn't have the ball early (in the game) but to our boys' credit, they responded well."
The Seagulls are now one win behind Warrnambool - the team it plays next week - with four home and away rounds remaining.
Magpies co-coach Neville Swayn rued a lost opportunity.
"We kicked 2.4 in the last quarter and four were gettable goals," he said.
"The last two weeks we've been in positions to beat top sides and haven't done it.
"The positive is we're getting into winnable positions but it's frustrating we're not getting the results. It's hurt us now."
Charlie Lucas (corkie) and Matt Field (head knock) finished the game on the Magpies' bench while Seagulls defender Johnny Bell hurt his ankle.
