Hamilton Sheep & Lamb report, July 3

There was a decrease in the number of lambs sold at Hamilton this week to 5080 with more heavy weights being offered the market was fully firm.

Not all the regular buyers attended or operated. There was some restocker competition on the better bred lambs however the light 1 and 2 scores below 14kgs were $20 to $30/head cheaper.

The light weight 12kg to 18 kg lambs 1 and 2 score sold from $126 to $143/head. The medium weight 18kg to 22kg 3 and 4 scores sold from $136 to $230/head and averaged 890c/kg cwt.

Heavy weight 22kg to 26kg 3 and 4 scores made between $181 and $240/head and averaged 890c/kg cwt. Extra heavy 4 score lambs topped at $288/head.

Sheep numbers were also back. Competition was also firm on last weeks rates except rams, they were $50/head cheaper. Light 1 and 2 score sheep made from $76 to $121 and the medium weight 2 and 3 scores sold from $120 to $153/head.

Extra heavy weight 2 and 4 score sheep made from $150 to $230 and exceptional wethers amde to $192/head.

Heavy crossbred ewe mutton averaged 635c and Merino mutton 580c/kg cwt. Heavy Hoggets sold to $181/head. Rams of all weights sold from $66 to $142/head.

Lamb numbers eased slightly and sheep numbers increased as agents yarded 3628 lambs and 1,745 sheep to total 5373 head overall. These sold to the usual array of trade and processor buyers, with restockers also present and active across the offering. It was another mixed penning, with a wide range of type, weight and quality available as the lamb market received stronger demand this week, with a small lift in price of $3 to $5/head.

Light weight lambs sold from $63 to $150, as the light weight trade 2 and 3 score selection made from $125 to $168/head. Restockers were active as they operated from $85 to $172/head for lambs to grow on. Trade weight 3 score lambs returned vendors from $168 to $212/head as most of these lambs made from 880c to 920c/kg cwt.

Heavy lambs were in demand as they sold from $206 to $232, with the few extra heavy lambs making from $240 to a high of $253/head. Hoggets received from $123 to $180, as light ewes returned prices from $83 to $114/head. Medium weighted ewes made from $113 to $148, with the heavy selection making from $150 to a high of $213/head. Wethers received from $105 to $182, as light rams made from $55 to $117, while heavy rams sold from $151 to a high of $199/head.
