WHALE watchers at Portland have been treated to a spectacular show with the gentle giants of the ocean rolling and playing in close proximity to the shore.
The whales swam across the Lee Breakwater on Friday afternoon.
Bob McPherson, an avid whale watcher and photographer, said the Southern Right Whales appeared to be a mating pair.
"They were pretty friendly and were rolling all over each other," he said.
"There was a few people watching.
"We had a whale a week before by itself and before that there was a few humpbacks.
"It's great to see how close you can get up to the whales from the shore."
