Sergeant Dave Walkley said a police divisional van crew attempted to intercept a dark blue Holden Commodore at 12.10am Monday in Cox Street.
"It was just a routine intercept," he said.
"The members activated their red and blue flashing lights, but the driver decided not to pull over, turned into Ballarat Road and accelerated.
"The driver of the vehicle is well known to police and we will be following up avenues of inquiry today."
Sergeant Walkley requested to driver hand himself in to police or officers would be knocking on his door this morning.
"It was wet a miserable conditions and the decision was made to not pursue the vehicle last night," he said.
