This year's bolter, currently fourth after finishing 2018 in ninth with just two wins, faces undefeated Cobden on Saturday.
And while Bloods mentor Lisa Arundell said everything would need to go right for her side to upset the premiership favourite, their chances have been boosted by the return of goal defence Brooke Hoare from a knee injury.
"We're looking forward to this game," Arundell said.
"It's no secret they're the benchmark and we know they'll expose flaws in our game.
"But that's what it's all about - you need to have games like this to improve.
"We'll need to convert as many turnovers as possible and limit our mistakes by playing disciplined netball."
Arundell said while it was difficult to find a chink in Cobden's armour, her side expected to be competitive.
"They are very strong defensively, put lots of pressure on through a midcourt press and have great accuracy under in the post," she said.
"I'm sure Cobden have bad days, but they're a pretty polished outfit that benefits from playing together for a while."
And with such an imposing challenge, Arundell said Aimee Moloney, her side's in-form player, would be doubly important.
"Aimee steadies us in the midcourt and her feeding into the goalies has been fantastic," the Bloods mentor said.
"She does anything you ask of her and provides that on-court leadership, which can be crucial when you're struggling."
Cobden coach Mel Starr said her side's one-goal win over Koroit last week exposed problems within its defensive structure that were exploited by the Saints' pacy teenager Isabella Baker.
"We just didn't have hands-over pressure and gave them too much space and vision that allowed them to score easily," she said.
"But we're very happy to be in our position and we've managed to trial all sorts of combinations."
Starr said the Bombers had a clean bill of health.
