Kevin Farquhar, 35, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to making threats to inflict serious injury and possessing a firearm as a prohibited person.
He was jailed for the 60 days he had already served in custody on remand.
On March 19, Farquhar had an argument with his former partner at Lismore. He threatened to shoot her and her family.
The victim was aware the man had an unregistered firearm at his home and reported the threat to police.
Officers attended Farquhar's property on April 3. He led them to a master bedroom of the property, where a .223-calibre rifle was on the floor.
Farquhar is a prohibited person under the Firearms Act 1996.
Investigations revealed the rifle was stolen during a burglary at Anakie, north-west of Geelong, on October 28, 2008.
Lawyer Morgan Adams said Farquhar purchased the gun "some time ago". He said the threat to his client's ex-partner made no reference to the rifle and the victim made the link because she knew the weapon existed.
Mr Adams said the threat was made in the "heat of the moment".
"It was fleeting and situational," he said.
He said Farquhar had a concerning criminal history but had not offended since 2012.
He said there was no physical violence involved and his client was upfront and cooperative with police.
Magistrate Mark Stratmann said possessing a firearm as a prohibited person carried a maximum jail term of 10 years.
"That is a reflection of how serious parliament regards this (offending)," he said.
