Warrnambool police and SES members are offering a solution on Saturday, fitting anti-theft screws to vehicle registration plates during their safe plate day.
Leading Senior Constable Trudy Moreland said the screws helped deter thieves from stealing number plates and using them to commit other crimes.
"This is an issue that really concerns us," she said.
"We want to encourage people to take advantage of the Safe Plate day.
"Number plates are being stolen and used for petrol drive-offs and other criminal activity.
"By installing the one-way screw you're adding an extra level of difficulty for anyone thinking of stealing your plates."
As part of Safe Plate day, Warrnambool SES volunteers will demonstrate the tools they use to cut open a car at an accident. People will also be able to see a range of CFA, SES and Highway Patrol vehicles.
A specialist in fitting child restraints to cars will also be available to make sure child seats are installed properly.
Bunnings will supply a free jumping castle.
Everyone who has number plates fitted with anti-theft screws will go into a draw for a $100 basket of goodies.
The event runs from 11am-2pm, Saturday, June 1, at Bunnings Warrnambool, Raglan Parade.
