There might be some sore heads, but that did't stop hardy racegoers.
Wednesday is traditionally a more relaxed day on course after the glamour of day one with the Ladies Luncheon.
Killarney's Andrea Lane and Caulfield's Colin Lane are regular faces at the annual three day event and have been coming for years.
They both said they love the atmosphere at the carnival.
Former Premier and racing lover Denis Napthine is attending all three days of the carnival.
He said his carnival highlights included Galleywood returning to win the Grand Annual after falling two years prior.
"Banna Strand was another - he jumped the fence and then two years came back and won the race," he said.
Dr Napthine said the carnival boosted Warrnambool's economy to the tune of $13 million each year.
"This is a fantastic event," he said.
"It's also good for the local economy and the local community. It not only puts Warrnambool on the map across Australia, but across the world."
Geelong's Sharon Smith looked resplendent in white.
She is attending the carnival all three days and is gearing up for the fashions on the field competition on Thursday.
"I have bought down four outfits for three days," she laughed.
She will wear a contemporary outfit tomorrow.
"It has an Asian spin," she said.
"The millinery is the focus."
She said she had noticed fur and animal prints were proving popular on course.
"Thursday will be very exciting," she said.
"There will be a lot of classic and contemporary looks I think. Just be happy in what you are wearing."
Lower Templestowe's Maxine Glennan hasn't missed a May Race Carnival in 40 years.
"I just love it," she said.
"I've owned a few horses over the years. As a young girl I always went to the races with my parents. As long as I live I will want to come here."
She said she would attend all three days of the carnival.
"We come each year with a group of friends," she said.
"After the races we head straight to the Hotel Warrnambool."
