In just their second visit to the carnival, an aptly-named sprinter Make It Count claimed a short-neck win in the 1200-metre maiden to give them their first triumph at Warrnambool since moving to Cranbourne two-and-a-half years ago.
Busuttin said they produced a third-placing at the carnival in 2017 but couldn't identify a suitable runner for last year.
"It's an exciting place to be," he said.
"You just want to be part of it."
Busuttin, 39, and Young had a stint in Singapore before shifting back to Cambridge, on New Zealand's North Island. They relocated to Victoria in August 2016.
Make It Count's narrow win relegated Crossley veteran Quinton Scott to second for the second time in four races on the opening day, with Nicajon flashing home late. Daniel Bowman's Sweet Venom was a further head away third.
