Troy Hull, 27, of Spring Dam Road, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates court to criminal damage, making threats to kill and driving-related offences.
Lawyer Ian Pugh said at the time of the offending Hull was "cooked on ice" and struggling after the death of two close friends.
He said his client was looking to become an accountant but had lost sight of that goal after his mother was convicted of drug trafficking.
Magistrate Franz Holzer said Hull had failed to comply with corrections orders in the past and sentenced him to four months in jail with 84 days counted as time served.
On January 8, Hull was intercepted by police driving on Warrnambool's Merrivale Drive. He held a suspended learner's permit and the vehicle was unregistered.
Hull refused to undergo an oral fluid test and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Then on January 29, he attended the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to support his mother Fiona Wright, who faced charges of trafficking cannabis.
Hull was refused entry to the court as he appeared to be agitated. He told security staff he would put a bullet in his sister's head and made threats to kill his brother.
Police were called and Hull was subsequently arrested.
The following day he rang his former partner, who was residing in temporary accommodation with her children after fleeing Hull.
He asked her to return money he had lent her but the victim said she had already spent it.
Hull became angry and told the victim he would torture her, slit her throat and "smash her whole house up".
The victim heard a smash in the background.
She attended the property the next day to find Hull had smashed a window in order to gain entry to the house. He told police he needed a place to stay.
