Sergeant James van Engelen said firefighters were called to a small fire in a planter box near the Gateway Church playground on Raglan Parade about 11pm on Friday.
He said the fire was extinguished before too much damage was caused.
Sergeant James van Engelen said while they hadn't yet determined the cause of the fire, police believe it was suspicious.
The enclosed playground and barbecue facilities, while on church land, were constructed for use by the whole community and officially opened in July last year.
It was constructed as part of the Gateway Church-run Work-for-the-Dole project.
