April 4. Yarding: 323. Change: 43.
A regular number, but not all the usual buyers, were present at the slightly increased sized yarding of cattle that were mainly of plain to average quality. Prices for grown steers averaged unchanged when allowing for quality not matching that of last week. Heavy beef cows also sold at unchanged levels, but plainer cows were 5c to 8c/kg dearer. Good quality grown heifers made 10c more, while most young cattle sold at firm levels for the given quality. The yarding comprised 84 grown steers, 22 grown heifers, 68 young cattle, 141 cows and 8 bulls. The odd few vealers sold from 240c to 280c, with yearling steers to processors and restockers making from 220c to 270c/kg. The average to good C3 and few C4 grown steers made from 245c to 280c, with the D1 manufacturing grade making from 165c to 180c/kg. The C3 grown heifers sold from 236c to 260c/kg. There was a large run of well bred C2 heavy weight beef cows, and together with the plainer C2 and the C3 grades, prices were from 188c to 236c/kg. The D2 cows sold from 160c to 200c, with D1 cows making from 140c to 172c, while the odd few E1 cows made from 60c up to 120c/kg. Just three B2 heavy weight bulls sold to 215c/kg

A slightly larger supply at Hamilton of 10,245 lambs, 735 more were sold that greeted most of the regular buyers as demand continued to remain strong.
Quality varied from plain to good, with some well presented heavy lambs, good drafts of medium trade weights and many light weight 1 and 2 score unfinished lambs.
Restockers and feeders provided some extra competition, paying mainly from $95 to $140/head for well bred store lambs.
Heavy lambs sold $10 to $15 dearer, as medium lambs were firm to $3/head stronger and lighter lambs sold unchanged.
Light weight 2 score lambs weighing 13-16kg made from $90 to $118, as light trade weights 17-20kg sold from $112 to $148/head, averaging 715c/kg cwt.
Medium trade weight 3 score lambs weighing 21-22kg sold from $142 to $162, as heavy trade weights 23-24kg made from $156 to $171/head to average an estimated 695c/kg cwt.
Heavy 3 and 4 score lambs sold from $165 to $185, as extra heavy 4 score lambs made from $190 to $225/head, averaging from 670c to 680c/kg cwt.
Sheep numbers decreased to 6699 head, 925 less, as there was another yarding of mixed weights and grades, with more light weight mutton appearing.
The market was weaker overall as light sheep sold $3 to $5 easier.
Meanwhile, the medium mutton was close to equal and heavy sheep sold $15 to $25/head cheaper.
Light weight sheep made from $60 to $93 averaging 440c, as medium 2 and 3 scores sold from $92 to $122/head, while Merino ewe mutton averaged 510c/kg cwt.
Heavy crossbred ewes, 3 and 4 scores, sold from $126 to $212/head averaging 525c/kg cwt.
