Matthew Howarth, 22, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday to a number of thefts.
He told police he was stealing at the instructions of other people he was living with.
Howarth was arrested on Friday last week and spent the weekend in custody.
Magistrate Steve Raleigh was stunned that accommodation in Warrnambool was so tight that Howarth had once been given a swag to live in, describing that as "appalling".
Howarth was jailed for the three days he had already spent in custody.
The magistrate also told Howarth to get a diary so he did not miss appointments.
Howarth said he needed to get on the proper medication so he could get his life in order.
But, Howarth was arrested again on Monday afternoon, charged with the theft of a charity tin from a supermarket and appeared in court again on Tuesday.
He was jailed for another seven days.
