Portland Bait and Tackle owner John Johnstone said there was talk the day may have been a record haul of "barrels" for the city. Torquay's Col Shepherd was one of the lucky fisherman, with him and his mates bringing in one fish that weighed 127 kilograms and another that weighed 104 kilograms.
Mr Johnstone said it was great news for the city ahead of the start of the Hooked on Tuna Fishing Competition on the weekend.
"It's great for Portland," he said. "Both boat ramps are full today - there would be close to 100 boats out today."
Richardson Marine Tackle Shack manager said he had never heard of more than 20 fish of this size caught in one day. He said the tuna was in abundance because of the high volume of red bait near Portland.
Mr Johnstone reminded anglers to look after their catch.
"It should be bleed, gilled, gutted and iced," he said.
