Hamilton police Acting Sergeant Roger McClure said emergency services attended a fire on the Glenelg Highway west of Wannon.
"A four-wheel drive vehicle was heading towards Mount Gambier," he said.
"The vehicle lost power and the driver turned around to go back to the mechanic. The vehicle travelling behind has alerted the driver in front that his car was on fire."
Acting Sergeant McClure said it was a petrol vehicle.
"It made a bang and was on fire," he said.
"The fire burnt about 100 square meters of grass and went into a paddock. About 80m of fencing was damaged."
Five fire brigade appliances attended the blaze.
