The festival is overseen by a community volunteer committee and much of its operations are carried out by community groups, service and sport clubs and schools.
The festival is the annual major fundraiser for many of those organisations, not only providing much-needed revenue but also giving the Port Fairy and district community ownership of the world-class event.
The festival brings in international and national performers, and visitors, and the locals don't miss any of the action.
The Port Fairy community mingles with visitors from far and wide.
Residents of neighbouring townships including Koroit, Yambuk, Macarthur, Terang and Warrnambool, all flock to Port Fairy for the Folkie, making the event much-loved across the whole region.
