Andrew McConnell, 36, of Prince Street, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to causing criminal damage, causing a nuisance to the public and making threats to inflict serious injury.
Lawyer Amanda Chambers said McConnell had served 67 days on remand, an experience he "did not enjoy".
"(Jail) had the effect we would all like someone's first time to have," she said.
Ms Chambers said since being in custody, McConnell had abstained from drugs and was a "completely different person".
"He is no longer introverted and angry," she said.
"When I read the summary (of his offending) to him, he was appropriately embarrassed."
The court heard McConnell had diagnosed schizophrenia and was suffering drug psychosis at the time of the December 17 offending.
In sentencing, Magistrate Franz Holzer acknowledged McConnell's early guilty plea and "fragility".
The court heard McConnell was at home with his mother and teenage nephew when he began arguing with his mother.
He grabbed a crowbar before pacing around the house, yelling and ranting.
His nephew felt scared and left the property.
McConnell then used the crowbar to smash several holes in the walls.
Police attended the scene in the early hours of the morning.
McConnell, still armed with the crowbar, approached officers in a threatening manner and was pepper sprayed.
He then went inside the house and police cornered off the property while they awaited further resources.
A negotiator, the police dog squad and members of the Critical Incident Response Team attended the scene. McConnell was arrested about 11am.
He was ordered to pay $500 restitution to his mother.
