The 35-year-old shot rounds of six-over-par 77 and four-over 75 in the opening two days at the PGA Tour event at Club de Golf Chapultepec to sit tied for 68th spot.
But he shot two-under 69 in the third round to jump five places and finish equal-63rd with American Bryson DeChambeau.
The Warrnambool export, who last week finished tied for fourth at the Genesis Open, hit 12 of 18 greens in his third round on Sunday.
Leishman hit his tee shot 320 yards to the green on the 316-yard par-four first, before two-putting for a birdie and starting one-under.
He then hit a tee shot 219 yards at the green on the 235-yard par-three seventh and followed with a 19-foot putt for birdie to go three-under, before a bogey on the eighth put him two-under.
American Dustin Johnson is first place at 16-under, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is second at 12-under, while Spain's Sergio Garcia, Americans Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Reed, and Australian Cameron Smith are tied for third at nine-under.
Marc Leishman is currently ranked number 16 in the world.
