Warrnambool police Acting Sergeant Lana Roberts said the girl's mother was away from the Ross Street property for about 15 minutes, collecting the girl's father from work.
"The girl was in her bedroom, heard noises and thought her mother had returned," she said.
"She has seen a man wearing a blue or black hoodie leaving through the front door.
"A wallet containing a small amount of cash, personal cards and bank cards was stolen from inside the home."
Acting Sergeant Roberts said the girl was left shaken.
"Her mother was only about a minute away and the incident was immediately reported to police," she said.
"The front door was left unlocked and we believe the offender may have thought the property was vacant at the time."
The police officer requested that residents always lock their property when they leave their homes.
"This is opportunistic offending. We ask that residents locked their homes and owners always lock their vehicles," Acting Sergeant Roberts said.
"The offender is described as being of medium height and build. He was last seen heading west on Ross Street.
"If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area, at that time, please contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," she said.
Acting Sergeant Roberts said a Port Fairy man in his 20s was also arrested overnight Saturday for possession of ecstasy outside a Warrnambool hotel.
