SKM Recycling has temporarily closed its Geelong depot and Moyne Shire Council is investigating alternatives but the only option currently available is to send recyclable collections to landfill.
“Council's recycling processor, SKM, has temporarily closed its Geelong depot, which means there is currently nowhere to send recyclable materials,” he said.
"This is a disappointment for both council and our community. No one wants recyclable material to sent to landfill.
“Residents recycling bins will continue to picked up as normal, and we ask that people continue to sort recyclable material and place it in their recycling bin.
“Council is committed to maintaining services to residents to ensure there is no disruption to waste collection.”
The council also asks that residents flatten or crush cans and plastic bottles before putting them in the recycling bin.
Some Melbourne councils have already dumped tonnes of household recyclable material in landfill this week after the environment watchdog ordered major recycling company SKM to stop accepting waste.
Both the Moyne and Corangamite shires have called on the state government to find a solution to the recycling crisis.
