Camperdown Police Leading Senior Constable Tanya Cook said the man deliberately lit the fire at dusk to clear dead grass in his backyard.
The man was interviewed by police for lighting a fire in open air in the country during a period of fire danger and could face charges, pending a summons.
Leading Senior Constable Cook said distressed witnesses saw and smelt smoke, before calling the CFA, who attended about 9.30pm and confirmed there was a fire.
“They had concerns given the hot weather yesterday and the dryness of the local environment that the fire was going to spread,” she said.
“This serves as a reminder that fire restrictions are still in place and that it is illegal to light a fire in the open air without a permit – even if it's on your own property – during a period of fire danger.
“If people aren't sure, they can always look at the CFA website for further details about what they can and can't do.”
The CFA has listed the current fire danger for the south-west region as “high”.
