The sale was a combined agents sale with Elders and Landmark conducting and completed a three-day selling program at Casterton for the week..
Landmark Casterton auctioneer Rick Smith said the sale was excellent considering recent sales.
He said there were a number of orders for finishers as well as for joining and sending back to the paddock.
The sale had the support of a Tasmanian order, an export order and strong local inquiry.
The south-east of South Australia was always strong at the sale and that was aided by bull studs buying to support their clients, Mr Smith said.
The result was much better than agents were expecting and was pleasing for vendors.
Mr Smith said the tough end of the sale was some lines of light Hereford heifers weighing 220-240kg that lacked competition and sold from 210 to 220c/kg.
Elders Korumburra set the scene for the day, buying the first run of heifers and paying from 267c/kg up to 287c/kg.
Injemira added to its buying of clients’ cattle with further purchases at Casterton while Bendulla Poll Hereford stud of Andrew Bennett, Mundulla, SA, bought 76 heifers that were by his stud's bulls for joining and sale before his annual bull sale.
Heaviest pen of the day was the tops of the Springvale Angus heifers, weighing 415kg. The 19 Pathfinder blood heifers made 260c/kg, or $1078.
Wiston West sold a line of 14 Angus heifers, Glatz blood, 392kg, that went for 265c/kg or $1039 a head.
Southdene Estates forwarded 17 Angus heifers with the top pen comprising 11 head, Glatz blood, weighing 376kg. The pen made 274c/kg or $1031 on a per head basis.
The Gums followed up its steer sale with a draft of Angus cross heifers, with the top eights being a pen of 23 that weighed 318kg and sold for 260c/kg or $828.
The annual draft of Herefords from Blink Bonnie sold in two pens with 35 heifers, 290kg making 282c/kg or $818 a head and the lighter pen of 35 weighing 267kg, selling for 272c/kg or $725.
Major vendor at the sale as in the steer sale, was Kevin Upton, Glencairn, who consigned 97 Angus heifers, Boonaroo blood, and 85 Herefords, Bowmont and Yarram Park blood.
The black heifers sold to a top of 284c/kg for a pen of 36 weighing 286kg coming out at $814 a head. Another eight, weighing 296kg, sold for 258c/kg or $764 a head.
Of the Hereford portion, the top price on a per head basis was a pen of 19 that made $740 or 255c/kg.
Regular vendors, Taronga Herefords, sold 80 heifers with the tops making 279c/kg, or $830 for a pen of 37 that weighed 297kg.
