Maher bought a colt by Star Witness for $300,000.
He may come home to Victoria with between seven to 10 yearlings from the first day of the sale once syndicators finalise trainers for their purchasers.
The group one-winning trainer also paid $240,000 for a Not A Single Doubt colt and $150,000 for a colt by Written Tycoon.
“There’s some very nice yearlings,” Maher told The Standard.
“I’ve inspected a lot of yearlings over the last few months that were entered for the sale.
“It’s a very strong sale for vendors as the well-bred, nice types are making good money.”
Warrnambool trainers Jarrod McLean and Patrick Ryan made purchases.
McLean parted with $480,000 for a colt by boom sire Zoustar.
Ryan paid $195,000 for a filly by Written Tycoon.
The Winslow-raised Maher, who trains in partnership with David Eustace, saddles up the heavily-backed Dubious in the $2 million Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
Two weeks ago, Dubious was rated an $8 chance with the bookmakers to win the 1200-metre race.
But after drawing barrier seven his price has come into $5.50 equal favourite with the James Cummings-trained Exhilarates.
