The Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechase winning trainer will attempt to win his second local cup in a week when he saddles up Snoano and Zebrinz in the $45,000 Koroit Cup on Sunday.
Purcell was successful with Guizot in the Woodford Cup last Sunday and the Warrnambool-based trainer has his fingers crossed one of his runners may add another cup to his trophy cabinet at his home track.
“It was wonderful to train the Woodford Cup winner last week I’m hoping to do the same with either Snoano or Zebrinz on Sunday,” he said.
“There’s just so many local people at meetings like Woodford and Koroit and to train the cup winner gives you a real buzz to achieve it in front of family and friends is very significant.
“I would say Snoano is my best hope. He’s only got a short 200-metre sprint so I’m hoping his jockey Jordan Childs can time his run to perfection.
“Zebrinz is well in at the weights with the claim for apprentice jockey Alana Kelly. He’s not the roughest hope in the race.”
Warrnambool Racing Club racecourse manager Daniel Lumsden said the running rail will be out six metres for the meeting.
“The rail was out four metres for Woodford last Sunday,” Lumsden said. “We’ve decided to take it out to the six metre position for Koroit.
“We’ve put 60 mls of irrigation on the track over the last week in an effort to have a good four rating for Sunday. I think the track will race similar to last week’s meeting.”
The Koroit Cup is scheduled to start at 4.55pm.
