This was just one of the many emotional tributes to young Port Fairy resident Xavier Cassidy who died on Friday after an asthma attack.
Xavier leaves behind his parents Kristy and Oliver and siblings Alicia, Dom and Sam.
Xavier had just completed year five at Port Fairy Consolidated School where he had been a student since foundation.
Principal Kath Tanner said Xavier was a loyal friend to many and it was a big loss for the school community.
“It’s been a huge shock,” Ms Tanner said. “He was really well liked by students and staff.”
A memorial was erected outside the school hall on Saturday where staff, students and families have written messages to Xavier and his family to express their sympathy.
Ms Tanner said Xavier was a talented art student and his art teacher had framed his final piece of work, which is displayed next to a school photo of him.
Classmates left Monster Energy drinks, which Ms Tanner said he loved, and lots of floral tributes.
Ms Tanner said it was important for the community to have a sacred space to connect with Xavier and his memory and to share and reflect on their times together.
“One of the things I’ve found most comforting is how people have embraced our memorial,” Ms Tanner said. “We didn’t predict how well received it would be but people have really treasured the space to leave flowers or a message.
“I’ve been overwhelmed with the emotional outpouring and response. I know people have appreciated having somewhere to remember him, to be able to say something about him or to leave flowers.”
Ms Tanner said the memorial was really beautiful. “For some of the children it might be their first experience (of grief). With most, it will be their first experience (losing) someone their own age. It isn’t common.”
One message said Xavier’s cheeky grin would be missed. “You always did such a great job looking after your brothers teaching them scooter tricks. Smile down at us from heaven,” it said.
Another tribute said: “Port Fairy won’t be the same without your cheeky face racing around the streets, laughing and joking with all you meet. You had a great heart and an even greater sense of humour. We will all miss you so much.”
One of his teachers said it was an honour to watch him grow up and recalled a young Xavier starting school and being “never afraid to live life”. “I will always remember your bright smile and enthusiasm,” she said.
“We will always remember you little man,” another said.
