Bargain shoppers voted with their feet and filled Liebig Street as the Australian Retail Association predicted the Boxing Day spend would be $2.5 billion across Australia this year.
Pitstop Menswear’s Amy Wormald said that Boxing Day had been very busy for the fashion store.
“With the sales on in other stores the whole street is buzzing,” she said.
While there had been a number of gift exchanges, Ms Wormald said there had been strong sales in t-shirts and shorts.
“Most people are looking for beach gear rather then suits,” she said. “We are seeing more holiday makers than locals, I haven’t recognised too many people so far.”
Greg Malseed, owner of George Taylor’s Stores, agreed that the majority of customers were holiday makers.
He said most were looking for camping gear and advice.
“People arrive in town and realise that they have forgotten the tent poles or pegs,” he said.
“Or they come in looking for comfortable camping beds and other accessories.”
Fishing gear is selling well for the store as people look for different activities to fill their holiday time.
“We have the beach and two different rivers for people to fish in,” Mr Malseed said.
