Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said a Kiama Avenue property was broken into between 7pm on Monday and 2pm on Tuesday.
He said the female victim’s mother attended the property on Christmas Day to collect a vacuum cleaner.
“She discovered the back door unlocked and a trolley and Christmas decorations sitting in the backyard, which were previously in the tin shed,” Detective Senior Constable Hughes said.
“The victim attended the address at 1.30pm and located the spare bedroom window open, the flyscreen to the glass sliding door removed and the glass sliding door appears to have been forced open.”
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said unknown offenders used a screwdriver to jemmy open a locked door.
Two marble topped tables, a jewellery box and passport were stolen.
“The victim doesn’t have a specific list of stolen items at this time as she didn't want to disturb anything,” he said.
“Crime scene services confirmed over $18,000 of jewellery was taken.”
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said the victim was devastated.
He said she believed there was CCTV footage that could assist police with their investigation.
Anyone with information should call Warrnambool police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
