The Port Fairy resident, who wished to remain anonymous, was asleep at home with her husband and two young children.
She said she woke about 2am to find people lurking near the side of her Mills Crescent home.
“I saw shadows passing my bedroom and then I heard people near the side of the house,” she said.
“I turned all the lights on and they hightailed out of there.
“Then in the morning I saw on Facebook that multiple cars had been broken into and I just couldn’t believe it.”
The woman said she felt terrified.
“I had my son in the room with me too, it’s pretty scary. I don’t think I slept much after that,” she said.
“This is really unusual for a small town like Port Fairy. Everyone is really upset and disappointed that something like this has happened to such a small and tight-knit community.
“Everyone here is really community focused and supportive of each other. This is a blatant breach of our trust and privacy.”
The woman, who has lived in Port Fairy for three years, said she knew several people who had items stolen and cars broken into.
“It’s a timely reminder to not leave your personal items in your car but it’s also so disappointing that you can no longer feel safe leaving your car outside your house,” she said.
“It’s a bit surreal that this has happened in our beautiful little town and hopefully people remain vigilant over summer when the town gets such an influx of people.”
Police allege multiple offenders were involved in the overnight crime spree on Monday.
Several homes were robbed and four cars stolen from properties in Singleton Street, Jehu Street, Brophy Street, Anna Catherine Drive, Reardon Street, Mills Crescent, O'Reilly Street and Corbett Street.
A stolen 2006 Lexus (registration ZQQ 448), a 2011 Ford, (registration YJV 708) and a 2009 Toyota Hilux ute remain outstanding.
A blue 2004 ford falcon, with registration ZHJ407, was stolen from Anne Catherine Drive and later found dumped in Melford Drive with minimal damage.
Anyone with information or CCTV footage is urged to call Warrnambool police on 5560 1333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
