South-west pair lead the way for region at primary school state championships

St Puis Primary student Grace Kelly rewrote the School Sport Victoria record books with a blistering performance in the 100 metres at the State Primary Track and Field Championships at Lakeside on Monday.

Kelly, also a member of Warrnambool Little Athletics Club, broke a 33-year 12-13 girls’ 100-metre record by 15 milliseconds with a time of 12.70, as she claimed a gold medal.

The 12-year-old was unable to back up her performance in the 200-metre final, finishing 18 milliseconds off the record in a time of 26.90 as she collected her second gold of the day.

Of the two events, Kelly was more pleased with her longer race rather than her record-breaking sprint. 

“I was proud of my 200m because I haven’t really competed in it for a while because I always pull out because I am tired,” she said. “But I just wanted to finish off strong (this year).”

Warrnambool Primary’s Jesse Suter, also a member of WLAC, finished with his own swag of medals. The 12-year-old finished second in the shot put (13.44 metres), 100 metres (12.40) and the 4x100-metre relay, alongside Cooper Phillpot, Ryan Lucas and Aidan Forsyth. 

The quartet has made the final every year since the 9-10 age group but this year was the first time it secured a medal. Suter said it was redemption for himself and his relay teammates.

“I was proud of my 100 metres and the relay because of last year,” he said. “The relay because we dropped the baton last year and missed out and the 100 metres because it’s the first time I have ran it competitively.”

The pair has qualified for the Victorian team for the national championships in Melbourne from November 23-27.

Warrnambool College capped off a strong Secondary Track and Field Championships with eight medals last Monday.

Naticia Varley collected three medals and just missed out on a fourth in the 18-20 girls’ age group. She finished second in 400 and in 800 metres, third in 1500 metres and fourth in 200m. Ayden Suter was the only other multiple medal recipient as he threw his way to a third in both the 15 boys’ shot put and discus finals.

Darcy Johnstone (second in 17 boys’ 110-metre hurdles), Jayden Annett (third in the 16 boys’ triple jump) and Layla Watson (third in 12-13 girls’ 100 metres and fourth in 200 metres) were the school’s other medal winners.

Terang College’s Shirene Morgan and Brauer College’s Haydn Stutchbury were two other south-west students who claimed medals.

Morgan finished first in all three –  long jump, 100 and 200 metres – of her 16-20 girls’ T01 events. Stutchbury claimed silver in the 18-20 boys’ high jump.
