The Tigers appointed the 26-year-old as senior coach for the 2019 Hampden league season, replacing Luke Crane who held the role for the past four years.
Sharp, a former VFL player with Footscray, will become a senior coach for the first time after spending 2018 as an assistant to Crane.
Though he said he already new what type of coach he wanted to be and what philosophies he wanted to take on.
"I believe culture is the key to long-term success and I intend to instill certain values within our club that will give us the greatest chance of achieving that success,” he said.
"So number one is creating this culture where we judge ourselves by the values and principles we intend to uphold.
"If we do that well I believe we will be a side that achieves a great deal of success in 2019 and beyond."
Sharp was confident he could help Portland experience more success after winning just six games last season.
He will be joined by assistant coach and former West Adelaide defender Jake Wilson who also returns to Hanlon Park.
“I am excited and can’t wait to get stuck into it,” he said.
“What I’m most excited about is getting around all the Portland lads.
“We’ve got a great bunch of blokes down at the club at the moment and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together in the not so distance future.”
