Warrnambool City Council has advised the public boat ramp has been closed for emergency maintenance, and it will remain shut until at least the middle of next week.

A metal cover plate between the concrete abutment and the concrete boat ramp decking has become loose.

The plate has been removed, leaving a gap which could present an injury risk.

Council’s facilities and projects manager Ben Storey said the plate had been damaged beyond repair.

“It will need to be replaced,” he said.

“Wave movements in the area mean that the gap is periodically submerged in water, so someone using the ramp could inadvertently step into it and injure themselves.

“With the dynamic ocean environment, the safety of anyone carrying out repairs also needs to be considered.

“Given the projected tide heights and weather, repairs are expected to be carried out in the second half of next week. Materials have been ordered and contractors are on notice to capitalise on the first weather opportunity for repair.

“The boat ramp is inspected weekly, however emergency maintenance is sometimes necessary.

“We would like to thank everyone for their patience. The safety of all boat ramp users is our number one concern.”
