Hamilton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said police received several reports of speeding motorists on Hamilton’s Mill Road on Wednesday morning.
He said private contractors working close to the roadside feared for their safety as drivers failed to slow down and obey signage.
“There are contractors employed to prune the trees back to give better visibility, who reported problems with motorists speeding on that stretch of road,” Sergeant Phillips said.
“40km/h signs were erected (in the 100km/h zone) for safety reasons.”
Sergeant Phillips said police clocked eight speeding drivers between 9.30am and 11am.
“We had two drivers, one from the region and one from Melbourne, that were caught travelling at 70km/h, meaning an immediate loss of licence,” he said.
“The rest were in the high 50km/h’s. Those drivers were issued with a penalty notice and three demerit points.”
Sergeant Phillips said the behaviour was appalling.
“These drivers were speeding in plain sight, right past the workers who were all wearing high-vis,” he said.
“The new speed limit was very well signed, with orange flashing lights, but drivers were still choosing their own speed limits.
“It is concerning because the workers were obviously worried enough to call us to come have a look.”
Sergeant Phillips said the police divisional van would continue to monitor the area on Thursday.
Anyone with information should call Hamilton police on 5551 9100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
