Pateman, who has a dual jumps jockey – trainers license  saddled up three of the six runners in the steeplechase including the winner Aldous but could not ride in the feature race on the program.  Aldous defeated Mannertone by more than five lengths with Surging Wave back in third place in the $30,000 race.

Pateman won a maiden hurdle on Ascot Red and was successful on Big Blue in a restricted hurdle. Both winners are  trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

“It’s been a great day,” the champion jumps jockey said. “Ciaron’s horses were impressive winning the two hurdles, while Aldous effort to win the steeplechase was sensational.

“Full credit to jockey Paul Hamblin. He’s a very underrated jumps jockey. I booked him to ride Aldous before the nominations closed. Paul rides the Casterton track really well.

“I was happy with the effort of Surging Wave. He seemed to have slipped at an early stage in the race and that never helped his chances. I’m not sure if Aldous will run in the last steeplechase for the year at Coleraine in two weeks but Surging Wave will be an acceptor for the race.”

The 2018-19 jumps season closes at Coleraine on September 23 with the running of a maiden hurdle, an open hurdle and a steeplechase.
