Detective Sergeant Jason von Tunk, from the Portland CIU, said at 11.40am on Friday police intercepted a vehicle in Barkly Street, Portland.
They arrested a 25-year-old man and later executed a search warrant at a Barkly Street address.
Detective Sergeant von Tunk said police found items connected to the armed robbery at the RSL on Tuesday night as well as more than 400 ecstasy tablets and $1200 in cash.
He said the man was assisting police with their inquiries and was expected to be charged with armed robbery and trafficking a drug of dependence.
The man was due to appear in an out of sessions court later on Friday.
Police alleged the man, armed with a 30cm long knife, entered the RSL at 9.50pm as two female staff members were preparing to close up.
The man was wearing a balaclava and headed straight to a strong room where the safe was.
Detective Sergeant von Tunk praised the public for their assistance which he said had led to an early arrest.
