Reigning premier Koroit confirmed it had requested AFL Western District look into an incident that left Jarrod Korewha concussed and with a badly cut mouth during its loss to Terang Mortlake.
The young forward suffered the injuries in the third quarter of the round 17 match before being stretchered from Mortlake’s D.C Farran Oval and taken to hospital by ambulance.
President Stephen Hoy said the club submitted the request on Sunday.
"But it is the view of the club that once you've requested an investigation you shouldn't comment on it any further,” he said.
"So we will respect the process and just sit back and let it play out."
Saints coach Chris McLaren said there was initial concerns Korewha might have suffered a fracture to his jaw or cheekbone.
He said the key forward was recovering at home.
But McLaren confirmed Korewha, who has kicked 65 goals, would not play against Warrnambool on Saturday.
“He has been cleared of any structural damage which is pleasing," he said.
"But he won't play this weekend, not after a heavy concussion and it is a bit of a dead-rubber for us as well.
"We won't take any risks with any head injuries at any stage of the season.
"And he might not be the only one that doesn't play. If there is doubt over anyone then we will take zero risks at this stage of the season."
