New president Shaun Dalton confirmed on Tuesday the club decided at its AGM on Sunday that it would not be fielding a side in the top division this season.
“We have only had six division one player this year so we had a few question marks about the side and we decided to pull it from the competition,” he said. “We will have division two and division three side this year.
“It’s very disappointing. (Former president) Michael Walsh had worked hard to get a board together to make our best shot at it and we tried very hard but we haven’t been able to attract the players we need.”
With the Knights moving down it gives Koroit the chance to move into the top division. The Saints will meet next Monday to decide if they would like to accept the promotion.
WDCA chairperson Gordon McLeod said the association had plans in place if the Saints decide to stay in the second tier.
“We have two options at the moment. If Koroit comes up there will be a full-team competition as normal,” he said. “If Koroit decides to stay down we will run with an 11-team competition and include a bye into the fixture.
“We aren’t looking at any other options than that.”
East Warrnambool told The Standard on July 17, at the same time Nirranda was reported to be possibly leaving the top tier, that it was staying put in division one.
