Bombers coach Nadine McNamara said her side’s Achilles heel last season was its attacking end of the court.
“Reflecting on last year, one of our key areas for improvement that we were looking at focusing on this year was our goal scoring,” she said.
“We felt that we hadn't shot enough goals last year to be competitive, where as this year we are one of the teams who has scored the most goals and we are really excited by that.”
In round one against Port Fairy it looked like nothing had changed as Cobden scored just 27 goals in its seven-goal loss to the Seagulls.
But since then the Bombers have gone undefeated and have not scored below 45 goals in each of their six wins to sit on top of the Hampden open grade ladder, boasting the most goals scored (372).
McNamara said the introduction of former Camperdown goalie Emily Finch had been a key factor in the Bombers’ resurgence.
“The support of Emily in goal shooter has really helped Molly (Hutt) relax,” she said. “Molly has been able to focus on her own game and her role in the team. The two girls have been combining really well over the last few weeks.”
Cobden’s defence is not to be discounted as well with the Bombers conceding the second lowest number of goals (260) so far this season, sitting only behind an improving Dot Jenkins-led North Warrnambool Eagles (251).
