Detective Sergeant Andy Raven, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said he went to Werneth at the weekend and met with a number of locals.
Earlier this year there were reports of sheep thefts in the area which led to the arrests of two men, who are currently going through the court process.
Detective Sergeant Raven said there had also been a series of thefts from farms reported during the past month which had residents on edge.
He said that during the meetings residents were advised about extra security measures which could be taken to help police identify and prosecuted offenders.
"It could be as simple as jotting down the registration plate number of a suspicious vehicle," he said.
On May 8 an unregistered single axle trailer was stolen from near a wool shed which was visible from the road.
On May 13 barking dogs alerted residents who saw headlights at between 3am and 4am.
Gate hinges were removed and two men were seen running to a four-wheel-drive vehilce towing a trailer.
Heavy items including tools, a welder and an air compressor were stolen.
On May 16 a Triton utility valued at $30,000 was stolen from a shed along Urches Road.
Last Thursday it was found dumped and torched near the Pitfield-Cressy Road in the Werneth district.
A generator valued at $700 was also stolen from a shed after gate hinges were removed.
Detective Sergeant Raven requested that anyone with information about any of the offences contact the Warrnambool police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
