Now it’s all about enjoyment and he is starting to see the results on his scorescard.
Longmore, who will compete in this weekend’s Westcoast Open Amateur tournament at Warrnambool and Port Fairy golf clubs, said the frustrations of the game no longer hindered him.
“I used to take my golf really seriously and I would get frustrated with a bad round, but I have sort of learnt to block those feelings out and just go along and have a bit of fun,” he told The Standard.
“In years gone by I could play a few bad holes and a bad shot and I would spit the dummy. Now I just hang on, as I never know what could happen, I could make a few birdies and make up for that bogey and be back in it.”
Longmore’s golf may be a bit of fun, but the Port Fairy pennant captain, who started playing golf at the age of 10, said there was still time and room for improvement in his game.
“I've been trying to improve my striking of the ball, my chipping and also my putting,” he said.
“I’ve spent more time playing and focusing on my timing and then once I get that I can put more power into it and go from there.
“Once you can iron out all the kinks and then it can all come together.”
Longmore, who will be playing with a 4.3 handicap in the 72-hole tournament, said he was looking forward to building some more strong form ahead of the Western District Golf Association pennant grand final at Warrnambool next weekend.
“I played at Warrnambool on Saturday and this weekend will give me another 36 holes to practice and help my lead up into the final.” he said. “To do consecutive rounds of golf it's always a good way to build some form and I hope I can get some out of this weekend.”
Fellow Port Fairy golfers Noah Best (0.5 handicap) and Paul Docherty (7.7 handicap) will also be playing on the weekend. They will be joined in the elite amateur event by Warrnambool’s Caleb Perry, one of the top fancies for the title, teenager Will MacKenzie, Nathan Robinson, Harry Ponting, Alex Pye and Wesley Isles. Cobden’s Dan Oakley will also contest the event along with Peterborough’s Matt Bell and Heywood’s Brad Koenig. The event, part of the Ivo Whitton series, tees off at 12.30pm on Friday at Warrnambool, followed by 36 holes at Port Fairy on Saturday and then 18 holes at Warrnambool on Sunday.
