The popular Women in Song concert includes performances by local singer/songwriters Oriel Glennen, Nancie Schipper, Michelle Uriarau, The Red Tent Singers, Louise Keast, Loui Ryan and Snakes Don't Need Keys.
Last year’s concert was a sell out and organiser Sheree Duncan is expecting a similar response at the June 10 event. “We’ve diversified it which will be really awesome,” Ms Duncan said. “There’s different artists and different genres and again we have drawn on our local talent pool of beautiful women from around the area.
“There’s so many people who have got amazing things to share. We’re trying to include them and create that space and create that circle among women.”
Ms Duncan said it had been a powerful year for women who had come forward with the #metoo campaign, an international movement against sexual harassment and assault.
“It’s so important for women to continue to be in the media and to step up and step forward and share their stories. Creating that space to share stories is very important, especially through song and music. It’s a special time and we’d like to keep that momentum going.”
She said the Reardon Theatre was a beautiful space and the concert was both empowering and nurturing for those who attended.
All money raised will go to the Bandari Women’s Project which aims to educate and upskill single Tanzanian mothers to help them gain employment. The program is based at the Bandari School in Mto wa Mbu which was established by Port Fairy couple Seif Sakate and Catherine Ryan with the help of south-west volunteers and donations.
Winter Weekends runs over four weekends, beginning on the June 8-10 Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The other weekends will be June 22-24, July 6-8 and July 20-22.
