The Warrnambool-raised golfer, who held or shared the lead across the first three rounds, was outplayed on a rain-delayed final day.
He shot a three-under par 68 to fall three shorts shy of American rookie Aaron Wise, whose six-under par effort was enough to earn his first tour victory.
South African Branden Grace and US duo J.J Spaun and Keith Mitchell finished tied for third.
Leishman’s Australian counterpart Adam Scott worked his way to equal ninth.
An eagle on the par four fifth hole was the highlight of Leishman’s final round which included three costly bogeys. The world number 16 started the Trinty Forest Golf Club-based tournament in blistering form, carding a tour career-best 61 to set the tone and he remained the one to beat on the following two days’ play.
