The point guard, who rejoined the Big V club this year, played 18 minutes in his first game of the season on Saturday. He will help cover Australian Boomer Nathan Sobey who has flown to America for his wedding following a four-game stint with his home club.

Seahawks coach Tim Gainey said Gray would be eased back after overcoming a knee injury but would be expected to lead when he’s on the floor against bottom-placed Latrobe City Energy at Moe on Saturday night.

“He’s a big inclusion. He had his first game on the weekend,” he said.

“It flew under the radar for a few teams and they recognise how good he is.

“He’s level-headed and keeps guys honest on court.”

Fellow point guard Liam Osborne is also expected to receive more court time.

The Seahawks and Mermaids, who will also play the Energy, will travel on a team bus on Saturday morning.

Gainey said the 10-hour round trip was a team bonding opportunity.

“Playing in Moe (rather than Traralgon where the Energy usually play) is better for us as we don’t have to go that extra half an hour,” he said.
